What is the impact of a car's piston ring installed upside down?

The piston ring installed in reverse will not play the role of sealing and oil control, even if installed on the car may be underpowered, lubricating oil consumption fast, engine performance decline or even damage the engine cylinder.

The cross section of the piston ring is not completely symmetrical, so it is useless to install it backwards. When installing the piston ring, the marked side should face up, and the openings should stagger 120℃ with each other, not facing the piston pin hole. Piston rings are metal rings that are inserted into the interior of the piston groove. There are two types of piston rings. They are compression ring and oil ring.

What Is The Effect Of The Piston Ring Being Installed Upside Down

First, The Function Of Each Part Of The Piston Ring

The first gas ring: the surface through metal special chemical treatment, ring outer chamfering, generally for special plating ring, chamfering and plating the purpose is to reduce the friction coefficient of the ring in the cylinder, against the chemical reaction of mixed steam and combustion gas.

Second ring, generally for carbon steel ring, the main function is to help the first ring done better tightness requirements, so the material requirements of the second ring is not the same as the first one, the two ring can't be installed backwards, otherwise the air tightness, ring durability are affected, why the first ring need chamfering, produced by the burning gas pressure is very big, easy on the ring Impact deformation, chamfered just to make the ring move more smoothly through the cylinder.

On both of these rings you will find one side stamped with the stamped side facing up as they are assembled. The next is the oil ring, which has no special requirements in assembly, but requires that the opening position of the three rings of the oil ring should be more than 20MM away from each other, and the opening distance of the two adjacent rings should be more than 120 degrees. It should be noted that the opening position of all rings should not be the same as the position of the piston pin hole, because the piston and piston ring are prone to leakage, scratch, fracture and other faults under the condition of thermal deformation.

The Four Main Functions Of Piston Rings:

1. Sealing Effect

The piston ring keeps the seal between the piston and the cylinder wall, controlling air leakage to a minimum, and is borne by the ring. Can prevent leakage caused by the cylinder and the piston or between the cylinder and the ring bite; It can also prevent the failure caused by the deterioration of lubricating oil.

2. Thermal Conductivity

The piston ring can disperse the high heat transfer generated by combustion to the cylinder wall, which can play a role in cooling the piston.

3. Oil Control Effect

The piston ring can scrape off the oil attached to the cylinder wall, and maintain the normal oil consumption, borne by the oil ring.

4. Support

The piston ring moves up and down in the cylinder, and its sliding surface is borne by the ring to prevent the piston from contacting the cylinder directly and play a supporting role. The piston ring is divided into gas ring and oil ring, the role of gas ring is to ensure the sealing between the piston and cylinder, used to seal the compressed air in the combustion chamber; The oil ring is used to scrape away excess oil from the cylinder, preventing it from burning into the cylinder.
